A WEEK'S PAPERS IN ONE.

This week's OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a wealth of interesting news. The week's sensation has been the preliminary trial, at the Central Magistracy, of Mrs. Jesuinu Maria Xavier, who was charged with shooting at Mr. A. J. Manton on December 27. Prisoner was committed to the Assizes. Mr. P. M. Hodgson, who defended, disclosed his defence. This is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

*

*

A serious break among the members of the Sze Yap Steamship Company, is indicated by an action which opened before the Acting Chief Justice (Mr. Justice Wood) in the Supreme Court on February 3. Mr. Eldon Potter, K.C., is for plaintiffs and Mr. F. C. Jenkin, C.B.E., is defending. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a full report of the proceedings.

*

The Legislative Council, on January 29, approved the modification of its resolution of June 19, 1930, of the Salaries Commission. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL furnishes a detailed account of the discussions.

Mr. Justice P. Jacks, in the Summary Court, gave judgment in favour of Mr. J. M. Xavier, a canvasser, who sued the China Neonlite Comparty, and partners therein, for commissions. The case unfolded the intricacies of sales methods and purchase contracts, which the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL reports fully.

* # *

Lt.-Commdr. P. N. Walter, R.N., commanding H.M.S. Somme, gave an interesting narrative of his ship's exploits in connection with the frustration of an attempted pimey on a cargo junk off Pedra Blanca, by two other crafts. Twelve men were charged at the Magistracy and committed for trial at the Assizes. A detailed report of the case is contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

*

*

*

In connection with a Chinese Press censorship case, a solicitor defending the Editor of the Wah Kiu Yat Po, sub- mitted that the regulations were ultra vires. The argument is dealt with in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

*

The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL also contains a full report of two prize distributions, the Ellis Kadoorie School and the Munsang College.

* #

The annual inspection of the St. John Ambulance Brigade by H.E, the Governor is described in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL which also contains an interesting account of the British Economic Mission's visit to Hong Kong under Sir Ernest Thompson, Ki.
