Winning the toss, E. J. R. Mitchell rent in Batger and Mackay to open the Volunteers' innings. The pair batted confidently, but at 23, Batger was the victim of a misunderstanding Grinths by enterprising batting car- and was ren cut for 7. Mackay and red the score to 72 before Mackay mistimed a shot when 27 and was easily caught. Griffiths, who had been erllecting runs rapidly, left six runs

Gittins and Mitchell saw the cen tury hoisted, but immediately after the latter was beautifully caught by C. Fincher in the long fold.
Four wickets then fell for an addition of only 3t runs, but a ninth wicket purinership aciled 40 runs and the
last wicket put on 30 runs to make the total 201,
S. V. Gittins, going in at 78, was undefeated at the close of the innings with 78 to his credit. He played an aggressive innings after a quiet open- 18ing and reached the boundary on thir- teen occasions. He scored 78 out of 128 123 in just over an hour.
Bowling late in the innings, Skinner R. W. 1eturned the good analysis of Zom 12 A 28 4|14—4, and Zimmern took wickets
