STREAMLINE RUDDERS.

Interesting Alteration to Cunard Liner.

NEW STERN FITTINGS.

THE CHINA MAIL.

In addition to the extensive yo- newal of turbine casings in the machinery of the Cunard line: Carinthia, Farried out recent- Messia. Vickers' ly at

works

2

at Barrow. very interesting } alteration in the stern) past has been made since the vessel's return to Liverpool.

Nearly all the post-war vassola ! built by the Cunard Company are fitted with single plate type rudders with a small overhung balancing members on the forward side, fitti ligneath the vertical line of the rud- j der pintles. This arrangement, coupled with the form of the stern post, results in approximately, a 30-inch space between the ruditer stock and the stern post, and per- mits very considerable eddying to take place from the immediately ad-

|jacent propellers.

The improvement which has just been carried out consists of filling each of the spaces between the rud- der pintles with steel box structure Attings. The lowest one has been "made to the radius of the stern" frame, and the upper ones more of, less rectangular, while an addition- al streamline cover plate has been fitted on each aide of the box to secure an even flow of water past the stern frame and thence to the rudder itself.

No work has been done to the actual rudder. but should the al- feration already carried out prove that it is worth the expenditure, no doubt a further streamline plating of the rudder stricture will be put in hand.

THE SAILOR'S KNOT.

The announcement by the Ad- miralty of the issue of a black silk tie of superior quality for the men of the Navy is a reminder that for many generations a black silk hand- kerchief or tie had been a distin- guishing feature of the anilor's uniform It has been said that it was introduced as a memorial for Nelson, but actually there evidence to show that it WAS in U80 in the latter part of the eighteenth ren- tury. At one time the black silk | handkerchief, folded diagonally, served to protect the backs of the men's jackets from the rubbing of the pigtail. At Nelson's funeral the men split their handkerchiefa in two and wore -one half as a mourning band on their arms. modern times the proportion of men dressed as seamen has tended to de-

has continued in use for those dressed in what is called the fore- and-aft rig-that is with jackets
