Overland China Mail.
A WEEK'S PAPERS IN ONE.
News of the first piracy In the present year reached the Colony during the week, when a radio message told of the seizing and looting of the Chinese-owned Hsin Ming, which it is thought was en route from Shanghai to Foochow Three passengers and a compradore's assistant were also kidnapped, the pirates leaving the ship at Honghai Bay. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives detalls of the affair, Two men charged with conspiracy to commit arson in Wing Lok Street in October last were sentenced to three years' and two years' hard labour, respectively, at the Assizes, after a protracted trial. A third man was dis- charged. Full reports are contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
What both Judge and prosecuting counsel termed a very gross libel on the honour of a young Chinese lady teacher resulted in judgment for $1,000 and coste being given against a Chinese newspaper published in Hong Kong. In giving judgment, His Lordship made scathing comment upon the behaviour of the defendants in the case. The case is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL,
Seven years' hard labour was the sentence passed upon a convict who stabbed a British warder in Victoria Jail in October last. Prisoner in his defence, alleged that he was driven to the act because of ill-treatment by prison officials, and other reasons, but the Chief Justice held that, even in- the event of these statements being true, they were no mitigation of the crime. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives a complete account of the hearing,
An interesting address, reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL, was given during the week before the local Rotary Club by the Hon. Foo Fing-sheung, the subject being "The Civil Code in China,"
