"NOT SO DUMB."

For the first time in history, a coloured picture was transmitted by wire, when Marlon Davies began work on "Not So Dumb," her new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer feature, which opens to-day in the Queen's Theatro.

The picture, sent from New York by Howard Greer, noted style expert, was a three-colour print of a sketch he made of a gown worn by Miss Davies in the new.film, and Tele- sent over the Pacific graph and Telephone system in three "key" prints, which, when printed together, was a perfect re- production of the costume design- ed by Grear.

"ONE MAD KISS."

Marcel Silver, director of "One Mad Kiss," Fox Movietone musical romance with Don Jose Mojico, Mona Maris, Antonio Moreno and Tom Patricole, which will come on Sunday to the Queen's Theatre, has decided views on music.

*The musical talkie of the future," he says, "will conform more to the harmonic type than the melodie."

He explains that such composers as Debussy and Ravel are harmonic while Irving Berlin Is of the melodic school.

"This change will come gradual- ly", he says, "through the educa- tion of the public to less restricted form of harmony. Gerabwin's Rhapsody in Blue' is an illustration of the public's Involuntary musical education compared to his recont An American in Paris." The former seem melodic, or old fashioned; the latter, its har monics, discords and effects is the rage. This has been caused about by radio and phonograph. A WEEK'S PAPERS IN ONE.

News of the first piracy in the present year reached the Colony during the week, when a radio message told of the seizing and looting of the Chinese-owned Hain Ming, which it is thought was en route from Shanghai to Foochow Three passengers and a compradore's assistant were also kidnapped, the pirates leaving the ship at Honghal Bay. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives details of the affair.

Two men charged with conspiracy to commit arson in Wing Lok Street in October last were sentenced to three years' and two years hard labour, respectively, at the Assizes, after a protracted trial. A third man was dis charged. Full reports are contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

What both Judge and prosecuting counsel termed a very gross libel on the honour of a young Chinese lady teacher resulted in judgment for $1,000 and coste being given against a Chinese newspaper published in Hong Kong. In giving judgment, His Lordship made, scathing comment upon the behaviour of the defendants in the case. The case is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL,

Seven years' hard labour was the sentence passed upon a. convict who stabbed a British warder in Victoria Jail in October last. Prisoner in his defence, alleged that he was driven to the act because of ill-treatment by prison officials, and other reasons, but the Chief Justice held that, even in the event of these statements being true, they were no mitigation of the crime. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives a complete account of the hearing.

An interesting address, reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL, was given during the week before the local Rotary Club by the Hon. Foo Ping-sheung, the subject being "The Civil Code in China.”
