CHRYSLER

What Chrysler claims- Chrysler does!

Chrysler is the proved and ac- cepted embodiment of the best there is in speed, pick-up, silent power, hill-climbing, smooth- ness and safety.

All of Chrysler's popularity, prestige and success is due en- tirely to what Chrysler cars actually are and what they actually do. With Chrysler,

CHRYSLER

it's results, not promises; performance, not claims.

Take your ride in a Chrysler and sense that very definite something which makes a Chrysler a Chrysler ... that something which is so

different

so much more thrilling that something which inspires a pride of ownership all its own.

WORLD'S RECORD.

Plans of "Wizard " Smith's Racer.

Mr. Norman Smith the Austra- lian contender for the world's speed record over a flying mile, reports that the Fred H. Stewart Special, which Don Harkness, the Sydney engineer, is building for an attempt early next year in New Zealand, is progressing satisfac- torily. The production will be 100 per cent. British, every part being made either in England or Austra lia. A feature of the car, which will closely follow the streamlining of the Golden Arrow, will.be its low construction; the highest point from the ground being only 88 inches or only half an inch higher than the pffective height of the tyres. Thus the Stewart Special will be 4 inches lower than the Silver Bullet bullt in England for Kaye Don's attempt in U.S.A. early this year, an effort that was ren dered fruitless by the unsafe con- dition of the sand speedly at Day- tona Beach. It will also be 7 inches lower than the Dunlop shod Golden Arrow with which the late Sir Henry Segrave established the world's greatest land speed of 291.36 m.ph at Daytona in 1929. The driver's seat will be set very low between the two propeller shafts.

As regards the Napier aeroplane | engine-loaned for the attempt by British Government-Mr. Smith states that the engine, which is specially built for stream. lining, is a world beater. No de- tails of this engine are permitted to be made public. It is interest- ing to note that a similar Napier engine was used in the Gloster sea- plane which recently in England travelled at the rate of 6 miles per minute, or 360 miles an hour.

STEERING CONTROL.

Owing to the steering gear fall- ing a man was killed in London by a car driven by the youthful daughter of a well-known member of Parliament. The coroner tried to make the flesh of the jury creep by telling them how alarming it was to think that thousands of

cars in London streets might get

out of control if the steering dis- located. The motor trade in Lon- asper- don resented this implied sion on the soundness of workman- ship, and promptly made it clear

Assuming that these points have received attention,-and- that the engine is in reasonably good order, the carburetter adjust- ments then can be taken in hand. It is not generally appreciated that a car engine operates most eficiently at fairly low speeds on fill throttle openings. The best speed, which varies for every car, will be found somewhere in the early 80's," as above. this speed wind resistance starts to absorb the greater portion of the driving energy. At low speeds in top gear and on a level road, very little Dower is necessary, therefore the throttle normally is nearly closed and fuel is used at a very high rate in relation to the power de- veloped through Inefficient opára- tion under there conditions. Now It will be obvious that to run under the best conditions of wide-open throttle and fairly good speeda, calls for carburetter adjustment.

The mixture strength should be retained, but the quantity admitted to the engine should be reduced by smaller choke tubes, or adjustment in the case of a variable jet car- buretter.lee

Weakening the mixture without reducing the quantity will do no good from the economy point of view, as the engine will not “ de-.

This "fet", figure-the Dunlop. Perdriau Co. states-wes sacer- tained during fecent tests at the University of Michigan (U.S.A.), where a carburetter made of glass was tested for heat. In the teate it was found that the petrol bub bles, under varying degrees of heat. In the tests. It was found that the petrol bubbles, at high engine speed, were sucked through the let with little effect on engine running, but once the revs. got down, the bubbles Increased in size, and choked the small orifice of the jet When it is pointed out that the volume of petrol gas is approximately 180 times greater than an equal weight of liquid petrol, it will be realised how im possible it is for the very small hole through carburetter jet to paas sufficient gas to enable the engine to function properly

This explanation will probably elucidate for many motorista why their cars run so much better and smoother during cool weather than when the thermometer, Agures re- gister high. To cure the trouble cited is in some cases a dificult.
