"Floater" Scheme Abandoned. When the drydocking ac- commodation for the new Cunard-Luchow, British str., 1,221 tons, er was first raised. It was suggested that the existing €0,000-ton floating dock should be lengthened by the addition of one or two sections to supple- ment the Bever of which it was built, but this Iden has now been abandoned (states our South- ampton correspondent).
The naval architects who were consulted were certain that the ar- rangement would be feasible, but some doubt might well have been felt as to the effect of placing upon vessel several thousand tons heavier the structure after extension
than any contemplated when the Un- main portion was designed. questionably new stresses would be ercated, and whether or not they would be effectively provided for in the very considerable alteration would be to some extent at least a point to be settled by actual experi-
ence.
The graving dock will cost much more than even a new "floater," but Its maintenance will be less and there are other advantages to be taken into account. To ensure that it will meet the requirements of even greater vessels than the pro- jected Cunarders, the railway com- pany have decided to leave a margin of 182 feet with which to meet any. challenge which may come from shipping companies in the future.
As to the site of the new graving dock, it may be in one of two places, At the extreme end of the docks extension at Millbrook the plans have shown an area set aside for such accommodation,
but it may also be recalled that the Southern Railway Company own a consider- able stretch of the Weston shore at Woolston.
It is presumed that the graving dock will take at least three years to complete, and as the new Cunar- der will take about the same period to build, Southampton will be quite ready to receive the vessel upon her delivery from the yard of Messrs. John Brown and Co., Ltd.,

Dr. Meinesz then showed pictures} of certain parts of the West Indies on his first trip which lasted for two months. They started from Sourabaya through into the Indian Ocean, spending a few days on the felanda they passed, eventually into' the Bay of New Gulnes travelling Inland
excursion 80 miles from the coast, and finally back to the island of Bomban, eventually north of New Guinea into the Paci- fic and back to Sourabaya. They submerged more than 100 times in these two months. He showed pic- tures of the various islands they had visited on this trip showing how some had been, isolated from civilisation for a very long timo and tracing the ancestors of many of the islanders; he also showed specimens of architecture showing beautiful gateways, temples one showing a bicycle in its decoration. He pointed out that scientiste now think they can trace four waves of people from the prehistorical one in the beginning to the Christian era, but since then the Malay wave had come over the Archaopelaga.
