Geneva, Saturday. Although the classic Idea of slavery, meaning slave markets and slave dealers, does not exist in the Negro republic of Liberia, what is tantamount to slavery certainly does exist there, according to the findings in the International Com- mission of Enquiry which has just sent in a report to the League of Nations. The report was present- ed to the League in September, but has just been published.
The report declares that inter- tribal domestic slavery is rampant, and the pawning of persons is also recognised in the republic's social economy. The
report accuses several high officials of the Liberian Government of sanctioning com- pulsory labour, and declares that the Liberian frontler force has assisted such recruitment.
Evidence is also adduced of slave- driving, with the flogging of re- calcitrants by Americo-Liberians, Heavy fines are Imposed on the villagers, if the requisite number of labourers is not, found.-Reuter.
