Jones won our Amateur Open title at St. Andrews last May, when he put out Cyril Tolley at the nineteenth hole and defented Roger Wethered in the final.

Wonderful Tolley. No one of our golfers played so finely against Jones as Tolley, and I shall always hold the opinion that Jones was very lucky to win. Hie second shot to the Road hole struck Into à mass of spectators, which stopped the ball from going into the dreaded road and enabled him to snatch a hard half in four. The match was then all square.

No one was more disappointed than Tolloy when he came up and saw his opponent's ball lying safò| some 20 yards from the flag-atick. I saw the shot and the ball coming at us, but the gallery was so dense that it was Impossible to move so many people quickly enough.

Bobby Jones held the opinion that the ball would not have run into the road, but the ball pitched a few yards from me when it was going quite fast.

CAPABLANCA LOSES

SURPRISE IN HASTINGS CHESS TOURNAMENT.

London, Yesterday. In the third round of the Inter- Still, these lucky rubs of the championships nowadays when the national Chess Congrèse at Hast- green are part and parcel of golfings a notable defeat was that of inks are crowded by thousands of the famous ex-world Champion spectators, all of whom are anxious Capablanca by the Indian Sultan to see each stroke, and especially Khan, Champion of Britain, in sixty-five moves. In the course of the game Sultan Khan sacrificed his queen for two rocks.

the putting.

I would never watch putting as a spectator, for it often proves a dull business and does not give me

the same thril as watching the flight of the ball off a long iron shot, or the joy of a delicate ap- proach and loft on to that part of the green which will aid the ball to le dead at the holeside.

George Vor Elm is another who has retired from American amateur golf, and the absence of these two will make a vast differ- ence to the composition of their team for the Walker Cup, which is a trophy we have yet to win

Serious Gol.

Young Americans are taking to golf very seriously. They are Glavishly copying the style and methods of Bobby Jones, whom

they will be able to follow oven more closely after studying the in- structional films, to work on which, apparently, is the chief reason for his retirement.

American schools, for both boys and girls, have their golf instruc- tors who teach the swing at the right, age, whereas our schools look askance at golf and forbid boy scholars to play what used to be called a game for old men.

The Americans have found that they have to be fit and hard to play the game well. Most of their Walker Cup and Ryder Cup teams gave up smoking before the con- test, and generally looked after their physical fitness.

This is tha Brat game that has ever lost in a Capablanca

Sultan tournament to England. Khan up to now is the only play- at Hastings to win all his games-Reuter.
