Woman Detained,

A sensational shooting affair took place at No. 416 Lockhart Road, about 1 p.m. on Saturday, when Mr. A. J. Manton, a Traffic Inspector employed by the Hong Kong Tramways, Ltd., was seri- jously wounded. His assailant is alleged to be Mrs. J. Xavier, with whom he was on friendly terms, and it is thought that an alterca- tion took place, ending in Mr. Manton being shot.

Three bullets were fired, one en- tering his arm and two his back. After the affair Mr. Mantoni managed to go to No. 2 Police. Station, which is close by, and re- port the matter, afterwards be- ing removed to the Government Civil Hospital.

Upon enquiries at the Govern- ment Civil Hospital on Satur- day night, the condition of the patient had not yet been definitely ascertained, but was stated to be "generally Batisfactory." An operation at a later stage will be necessary to re- move the bullets.

After further enquiries it is 'stated 'that Mrs. J. Xavier acted as housekeeper for Mr. Manton and another European who shared the same flat at No. 416 Lockhart Road, Wanchai.

SHANGHAI CRISIS.

Chinese To Seize Cable Landings ?

London, Yesterday, The Daily Herald gives prominence to a sensational despatch from its Shanghai correspondent alleging seri- ous crisis in regard to the re- newal of contracts with for- eign cable, companies hinting at the possibility of a Chinese attempt, to seize the cable landlage. Reuter.

[Enquiries made locally by the China Mail-this morning elicited the information that little was known here about the conditions prevailing in the North, presumably on the Yangtze, at the moment. It is possible that the Chinese authorities are using a threat to seize the cable line land- Ings as a lever in the negotia- tiona as to cable rights which have been proceeding for some little time.

The question is not one that concerns Hong Kong, al- though messages from semi- official Chinese sources during the past few months have re- iterated the intention of the Chinese to take over" the cable service in its entirety.]

being entered by the other defen- dants.

For the prosecution, Revenue Officer A. W. Grimmitt sald that at present they were only being charged with possession of six 1 lb. tins of morphine, manufac tured by Battersea, druggists, London. He applied for the with drawal of the boy (as he was bei ing used as a witness for the prosecution) and it was granted. He went on to say that all defen- dants, were arrested on Saturday night in the Tin Wah tea-house, and that he would bring forward) evidence to say that the third and fourth defendants were only car- riers, who took the drugs to the place for the second and first de-: fendants.

Some Discrepancies.

Mr. Gelamitt, continuing, said that he searched severni other ad- dresses, and found certain amounts of other drugs. In the second de-') fendant's suit-case was found a bottle of some drug, which had not yet been analysed. Observing that' it took a long time to go into these casce, Mr. Grimmitt asked for a week's remand, adding that there were certain papers and documents found on the premises.

His Worship granted the remand, and fixed ball at $2,500 each.

The Police are reticent as re- gards the affair, pending com-i plete enquiries into the circum- stances. It is understood, how- ever, that Mr. Manton was about to give up his flat at Lockhart Road, (the actual number being. 375, and not 416, as he stated upon larrival at No. 2 Police Station).
