EXTRA YEARS AT SCHOOL.
Parliament is The attention of again to be directed to ralaing the age of compulsory school attend- ance. Speaking on that subject in the House of Commons in May, the President of the Board of Educa tion, Sir Charles Trevelyan, said that his proposal to raise the com- pulsory school age in England and Wales from fourteen to fifteen would affect 400,000 children and have the ultimate result of leaving employment avaliable for 100,000 adults. The proposal will doubtless be no less controversial in the new session of Parliament than it was in the old. Education pro- vides a perennial field of battle for politicians, some of whom would spend millions on urmaments more freely than thousands on schools. Perhaps Parliament, dependent as it is so much
on party rule and majorities, and subject to tempor- ary, and accidental influences, is

In addition, there is in termed D America "mothers' ald" grant, made to the parents of girls who wish to stay at school until they are about 18, but who would not be able to afford to do so otherwise.
