The vast increase of modern traffic has not only ren- dored the old steel bascule bridge inadequate and obsolete, but has created new problems which every borough and county is now having to face. Your new bridge forms part of the first-class high- way A..12, a route of such fin- portance that the Government have included it in the very re- stricted list of trunk routes, and I understand that it will also add greatly to the facilities for navi gation, and that by sundry widen- inga and clearances it will "form the centre of an improved area in the town itself. I congratulate the Corporation and the Commis sioners, who, with the assistance of the Ministry of Transport, set this Important enterprise in hand, and I congratulate the en gineers, the contractors, and last but not least the men of all trades who have toiled so hard to bring his work to completion I now have much pleasure in declaring this bridge open, and in wishing to all who pass this way: safe and prosperons journey.
