EMPIRE BILLIARDS TOURNEY.

Chances of Lindrum Discussed.

BACK TO THE WALL.

THE CHINA MAIL.

The main topic of conversation wherever billiards lovers for gather just now is whether Walter Lindrum enn successfully concede 7,000 points cach match to players of the calibre of McConachy, the Davis, and Newman, saya Sporting Lifa billiards correspo dent.

It is not easy to calculate at curately the capabilities of this Australian wizard. In his tour last season he was playing purely "exhibition" billiards. By that I means there was little or no in- centive to go "all oni" if he did not desire to do so,

Vast Difference.

TENNIS.

RESULT OF LADIES' DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP.

INTERESTING PLAY,

Before a large crowd of apecta- tors at the U.S.R.C. courts yester- day Mra. Keary and Mrs. Taylor defeated Mrs. Gull and Mrs. McCaw 6-3, 6-1, in the final of the Ladies' Open Doubles Champion. ship.

The first set was eveny contested until Mre. Keary and Mrs. Taylor captured the seventh game to go cut at 6-3, Mrs. Keary, played a steady base-line game while Mrs. Taylor was spectacular overhead at the net. She was quick on her feet and frequently followed up a hard drive with a "smash" which invari ably won the point.

Too much stress cannot be laid on the vast difference between ex- hibition billiards and champion-second set was ship billiards. We have never seen Lindrum engaged in a match such as those he will have to play in the International Tournament now being played.

Of his skill there is no shadow

of doubt. His scoring ability is far above that of any other living players. Does he also possess that priceless asset in a billiards player's make-up-the right tem- perament? There

Not Favourite.

My personal opinion is that Lindrum certainly does not start favourite-for-this tournament, for, besides the Nittle matter of tem- perament already touched upon. must take into consideration the fact that the duration of each sesalon is fifteen minutes less

than it was last season.

As the score would indicate, the

President's Speech.

At the conclusion of the match, Mr. R. E. Lindsell, president of the Hong Kong Lawn Tennis Asso- ciation, said that although the tournament was run by the United Services Recreation Club, it was held under the auspices of the Tennis Association which all such open tennis tournaments should bo. He wished to thank the U.S.R.C. for the way in which the competi- tion was run adding that a special word of praise must be said for Commander Parsons, the tennis secretary, who had put in so much time to make the tournament the success it had proved to be.

Mr. Lindsell said that they had to be grateful to Sir Robert Ho Tung for the two boautiful chal- longe cups. The Ho and Lo families have been great patrons of sport in the Colony and the best prizes for the tennis competitions are With 24 session in a match, that from them.
