SEAMEN'S LIBRARY.

NEARLY THREE QUARTERS OF A MILLION VOLUMES.

The British Sailors' Society has just issued its report on the ocean library service, instituted by the society, in which it points out that the number of Hbraries tasued to, „December 31 of last year reached the grand total of 23,949, which re- prosents nearly three quarters of s million volumes. At the present time more than 1,000 British Mer chant ships are furnished with these libraries.

The report states while the main object of these libraries is to pro- vide a wholesome and enjoyable i form of recreation and entertain- ment for the crews of British mer- chant ships, every encouragement and opportunity is offered for study and reading of educational and, technical works. We have abundant evidence from the men themselves, of all ratings, that the selection of books provided meets their requirements in every pos- sible way and we are also fully aware that these libraries been the means of improving the

All libraries conform to a atandard classification which has been specially adopted by a com- petent library committee, and our long and unique experience which has brought us in close personal touch with the men has proved without doubt that our selection of books is one which is best suited to the varying tastes of the readers. No better testimony is needed than the hundreds of letters we receive in the course of a year from the men themselves, in which they ox- press their appreciation and appro- val of our libraries.
