SECRET DEPARTURE

OF FENG?

Red Leader Said to Be in South Shansi.

FOOD SUPPLIES LOW.

Peking, Tuesday.

accompanied

Feng Yu-hsiang,

by Sang Chih-yuan, is reported to have secretly left Talyuan for Pingyang in the south of Shanel, where he is busily directing the Kuominchun under Sun Liang- cheng, Liu K, Sun Tien-ying and Keo Kuci-chu to head for Kansu along the Shensi border, since the Intention at Feng has had

the Kuominchun to first to lead Kansu before the arrival of Na- tional troops.

A report from Shanghai states that Feng Yu-hsiang and Sung Chih-yuan are now residing in a church at Fenyang, 60 miles south- went of Taiyuan, where the Kuo- minchun are also concentrated; they are likely to move to Ning- hsin and the north of Shensi, in view of the lack of food supplies in Shansi,

Misleading Rumour. The rumour,

have belleved to been fabricated by the reaction- ary faction in regard to the ar- rival of Feng Yu-hsiang in Tien- tain, was circulated to mislead the attention of the public toward Feng, who is still in Shansi.

According to political circles, the Shanal forces have expressed their willingness to be reorganis- ed by the North-eastern author- itles on condition that the original rositions of the Shanal generals will not be removed and the Shan- al unita not be transferred to other places, while more or less Shansi troops may be disbanded if necessary. The Shansi envoys Lui Ham and Wang Lu-tao bave gone to Nanking to interview Gen- eral Chang Hauch-llang, in order to, proceed with the negotiation.

A number of National planes; again, flew to Taiyuan on Novem- ber 17, distributing pamphlets without dropping bombs.

Bandit Suppression. After several meetings between President Chiang Kai-shek and General Chang Haueh-liang were held, it was decided to appoint General Shang Chéu, chairman of Shanai Provincial Government, to take the full responsibility for the rehabilitation of Shanal. The order for this appointment will be issued within one or two days.

Shanghai, To-day. Commenting on the Boxer Indemnity Agreement between Great Britain and China a morning paper says that the settlement does crédit to both countries. The declaion to use the bulk of the remitted funds for rehabilitating and building railways in China and in grants to the Hong Kong University and univer- sities and the China Commit- tee in London is characterise-i as an outcome on which the Foreign Offices of both coun- tries can be warmly congratul ated.

"The Chinese Government makes a gesture of no little friendliness in recognising the value of the splendid work performed by the Hong Kong University for Chinese educa tion. The attention given to strengthening the cultural bonds between China and Bri- tain in the provision for the appearance of eminent Chin-- cse or British lecture plat- forms is no less gratifying.

The paper welcomes the dis- position of the Chinese Gove ernment to take full advantage of the experience possessed by. Great Britain in ploneer rail- way development and to go to that country for the material and equipment necessary for the rehabilitation of China's lines.

It declares that on the Bri- tish side there be appreciative recognition of the services thus. algnally rendered by Sir Miles Lampson to his country by thereby obtaining a substan- tial contribution to the allovia-· tion of the unemployment pro- blem at a time of special trade depression. The agreement Itself, however; is to be wal- comed, for it certainly encour- ages the formulation of more confident views than has been possible in the last few years on the subject of British- Chinese Relations.-Reuter.

TOWN SWEPT BY A TORNADO.

Buildings Wrecked and 25 Persons Killed.

SCHOOL DESTROYED.

Oklahoma City, Yesterday. At least 17 persons were kill- ed and 60 injured and 200 build- ings wrecked in Bethany, a town' seven miles from here, which was swept by a tornado, simul- taneously torrential rain flooding the streets.

Plucky Teacher.

The tornado also demolished a school at Camel, a short distance from Bethany killing two chil- dren and injuring the mistress. The latter behaved very pluckily. Looking out of the window, she anw that a storm was approach- ing and ordered the children to lie on the floor. A second later the tornado struck the building, smashing the wooden walls like matchwood..

Later.

The toll of the tornado is now 25 killed and 100 injured.— Reuter's American Service.

CAR IN FLAMES.

LEADING SEAMAN'S NARROW

ESCAPE.

The motor car which was com pletely destroyed by fire in Lock- hart Road yesterday at about 12.15 p.m. after the Fire Brigade had been summoned a little late, was the property of Captain Ramsay, RN., of H.M.S. Kent.

The driver, who managed to es cape in time, was Leading Sea- man H. W. Lloyd, of the Kent, who in his report" to the Police stated that he was driving along Lockhart Rond, and whiten near Rawrington Canal, a crowd of coolie women, carrying baskets, were in front. He swerved to the right to avaid them and in doing so his front wheel ran against-the kerb, causing the ear to turn over on its side., He got out from the door, and a few seconds later the car was on fire.
