A PIONEER. FIRST JAPANESE-BUILT LINER.
It is reported an Francisco that the Los Angeles Steamship Company has replaced the burned out City of Honsiula, originally the Kiautschou, Hamburg American
which has been condemned as past repair, by the purchase from the Nippon Yusen Kaisha of the Tenyo Maru; a ship which is historic as being the first modern liner to be built in Japanese yard, says the Journal of Commerce.
She was ordered by the now de- funct Toyo Kisen, Kaisha from the as nothing like her size has ever Mitsubishi Dockyard Company, and been attempted by Japanese builders she naturally attracted a lot of at: tention. Her keel was laid in 1905, but practically all the material had to be imported from England, and it was not until May, 1906, that work was started.
She was to be the first of three turbine liners intended to replace the British-built America Maru, Hong Kong Maru and Nippon Maru on the main service between Japan and San Francisco, and was a steel triple screw steamer of 13,454 tons. driven at a speed of 20 knots with
turbines fed by 13 single ended
bollers.
spend money where it was neces sary. The Tenyo Maru was fitted with two new high pressure tur bines, single reduction geared to the centre shaft, and her speed was greatly improved.
The advent of the new 19,000-ton motor linors that the N.Y.K. has built for the service makes the pioneer Tenyo Maru surplus to re- quirements, and for some time she. has been laid up. Her lack of carry- ing capacity is of no disadvantage to in the passenger business only, but her purchasers, who are interested
in Japan she will always be remem bered as the pioneer of the ship-j building movement which in duel course gave the nation her present place among the shipbuilding powers; of the world.
HONG KONG TIDE
The tide-table given below has been obtained by ald of the Tide-predict-
ing Machine, which includes 40 com- ponents for the better prediction of tiles, from the result of the analysis the Kowloon tidal qbservatory under of the tidal observations, taken at the direction of Dr Doberek during the years 1887, 1888 and 1880.
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very small,
The times of high and low-water with the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomens must not be considered to coincide being quite distinct.

The construction of such a ship in Japan at that time was a daring venture by the Toyo Kisen, but the Russian War was over and the Japanese saw no reason why their country should not go straight to the front. At the same time, they fully realised the difficulties under

had she not done so, but her mere. Thos. 2007.0 construction was a fine feather In
the cap of the Japanese, and they improved on her design, particularly in stability, so that the second ship of the type was able to carry over 1,000 tons more cargo.
On trial she did 20.62 Knots, and was put on the Trans-Pacific trade, where the Japanese were naturally very proud of her. As she got older the somewhat experimental ma- chinery with which, she was fitted began to give trouble and her speed dropped, while the TKK, was not at that time in a financial position to put her right.
There was a movement to pur chase her in Germany, but this fell through, and in due course the whole service was transferred to the Nippon Yusen Kaishe, who imme. diately showed their willingness to
