AN ACTIVE MONTH.
Were it not that every ship com- pleted leaves a blank which the builder finds it difficult to fill, re- cent activity would be more than In August, moro encouraging..
commissioned motor vessels were from British shipyards than has case, ever previously been the numbering 14 of 90,000 tons gross. Abroad, there were 9, giving a total of 23 for the world, of Of these 100,000

tons
When it is recorded that 4.motor ships of 160,000 tons gross were ordered during the month, it would appear that the, motor shipbuild- Jag position is satisfactory since the tonnage to be laid down is larger than that turned out. This
is indeed the case, but the remark does not apply to the United King dom, where orders have been com pletely absent, for all the ships in question are to be built in foreign yards.
Against this moderately large tonnage of motor ship contracts
the number of steamers ordered is negligible, since only one or two vessels appear to have been con- tracted for either by British or foreign owners. From present in
dications it would seem that when a revival occurs in the demand for
and
tonnage, cargo
passenger motor vessels will have an even.

The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-predict- ing Machine, which includes 40 con
of
ponents for the better prediction tides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Doberck during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yord and Aberdeen, the differences being very small.
The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomeus being quite distinct
