FRENCH SUPER LINER.

To Cost Nearly £6,000,000.

Paris, July 30,

A certain diacontent is shown in the shipping world at the post- ponement of the scheme for..na- tional equipment, in which a con- siderable sum is devoted to pro- viding France with a new sugar trans-Atlantic liner.

The boat is to be built by the French Line in reply to the recent productions of foreign shipyards, notably the Europa and Bremen and the projected 60,000-ton Cunarder. Its construction will be partly subsidised by the State under the Convention of 1912 for pete with other nations on the assisting the Prench Line to com- Europe-New York service. Since then the subsidy has been steadily. increased to enable the completion For the of still bigger ships. new liner, it is carried to a quar- ter of a million sterling.

In addition the Stata will ad- low rate of interest of 8 per cent. To enter service in 1934 as 'pro- vance loans to the company at the jected the liner should be laid down at once, hence the anxiety expressed at the delay caused by the failure to vote the necessary funds.

The Isle de France cost more than 200,000,000 francs in 1924, and it is stated that the new vessel will cost three times as much (nearly £6,000,000). As it is not possible to insure vessels of such a high value, it has been

will effect insurance to the extent of something over 200,000,000 francs, the balance to be insured by the State (for total loss and abandonment only) in return for the payment of insurance pre- miums by the Line.
