KYLSANT'S DENIAL.
AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING MERGER.
Melbourne, August 6.
A first class sensation has been created in local shipping and busi ness circles by the news telegraphed on Monday from Sydney to the effect that private advices from Lon- don indicate that negotiations have been entered into for the purchase by the Inchcape shipping group of the Kylsant interests, in the Austra- Han and New Zealand overseny trade. Mr. H. B. C. Larkin, now manager, in London of the 'P, and O. Branch Line, and former head of the Commonwealth Government Line, and prior to accepting that post for -muny-years-with-the-Australian United Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., is stated to be one of the prime movers in the announced transac tion
The new tariff, Increased taxa- tion, and costs of upkeep are said to have prompted the negotiations, coupled, of course, with much of the criticism which has of late been levelled at the Kylsant group.
Should this report from London prove in the long run to be well-! founded, and negotiations.reach a successful termination, all Austra- Han
will be shipping oversea affected, and consequently Ceylon ahlpping interests with Australia, so far as shippers' and the travelling public are concerned, likewise sub- jected to definite indueace.
The two opposite interests con. cerned to-day constitute the only real rivals for British supremacy of sea borne trade to and from Australia and New Zealand.
The Inchcape interests are asso- ciated, directly or indirectly, with the P., and O., BI, P. and O Branch, Federal Steam Navigation Co., Union Steamship Co., New Zea land Steamship Co., Australian United Steami Navigation Co.. Burns, Philp and Co., Eastern and.) Australian Shipping Co., and have of some an aggregate capital £30,000,000,

and The Steamship,
The shipping companies associated with Lord Kylsant have a capital approximating £50,000,000, since their purchase of the old Commonwealth Government Line and the Aberdeen Line, have spent a large, sum of money improving these services, and also on the White Star and Shaw, Saville lines, which are associated with them in the Australian trade.
Lord Kylsant has telegraphed that the report has nothing in it, but for all of that, there remains a pretty strong feeling that such an import unt scheme would never have re ceived publicity unless there was something in the wind. Naturally all are awaiting future news with
