Engineer's Find on the "Sarpedon."

CHINESE IN COURT.

The discovery, on board the Blue Funnel steamer Sarpedon of al thousand tahits, of oplum led to the prosecution before the Singapore District Judge, Mr. G. T. Peall, of": à Shanghai Chinese employed as a donkeyman on board the vessel. He claimed trial on a charge of possession of opium,

Leslie Dickson Hastie, fifth en- gineer on board the Sarpedan, in the course of his evidence stated that about twenty minutes to eleven on the night in question, while he was on his way back to the engine room, having taken the temperature of the refrigerating machine, he saw a Chinese greaser standing in the entrance of the engine room.

Hiding Something. Witness stated that the greaser looked as if he were hiding some- thing, as it was very unusual for a greaser to be up there at that time of the night. Witness sald he pushed his way into the engine room and looked down and saw another Chinese carry a sack. As soon as he saw witness, he drop- ped the sack and Tan away. The "accused came out from the engine room and picked it up and went in the direction of the starboard side of the ship. Witness approached him, took the bag and opened it, and found a smaller bag inside...

He took this up to the Chief En- glueer. The accused was arrested by Supervisor Gordon and identif- ed on the following, morning. Witness stated that the had been employed in the ship for some time. The bearing was ad- journed and hail of $1,000 was allowed.
