TO BE REWARDED.
Rarely is it that one discovers in the ordinary Chinese the pre- sence of mind or the courage which was displayed yesterday morning by a Chinese boatman on the Whangpoo, says a Shanghai paper in its issue of September 1, Usually a distinct aversion to water is exhibited by the average coolie, and the mere idea of swim- ming is as remote from his mind as the pyramids from Bucking- ham Falace. But, as is often the ense, there is an exception to the generally accepted idea of sampan coolies. This exception was found yesterday. Had it, not been for! the courage of a Chinese sampan man, another harbour tragedy would have resulted.
Returning from shore leave at 11.30 am, a British seaman, at- tached to the destroyer leader! H.M.S. Bruce, engaged a sampan at the Customs Jetty and directed it'to his vessel, which is anchor- ed at the British naval buoy off the Bund. The sampan was navigated to the gangway of the destroyer, where the seaman pro- A ceeded to clamber aboard. swift tide was running at the time and, owing to the bumping of the sampan against the warship's side, the seaman lost his footing and tumbled into the swiftly moving waters.
