A WARNING.
THE
LIBERTY IN PLACE OF DISCIPLINE.
Mr. H. A. L. Fisher, Warden of New College, Oxford, and Principal of the City of London Vacation Course in Education, indulged in a tilt at the "zealots of the school of liberty", in education as opposed to the school of dizzipline.
His replies to the critics of ex- aminations and the champions of bustle were:
"All young people have a strong. bent in the direction of icture; examinations have raised the standard of intellectual industry among the young."
"A fixed habit of intellectual industry cannot be acquired in a ,whirlpool."
Mr. Fisher was giving the teach ers attending the first lecture of the City of London vacation course the benefit of his thoughts on education inspired by the revolution" and State building age in which we live."
The lecture was delivered at the Holborn Restaurant.
At the official opening of the course at Guildhall in the afternoon, at which the teachers were welcomed by the Lord Mayor (Sir William Waterlow), the Bush scholarship for educational research was pre- sented by Viscount Burnham to Mr. Frederick WHliam Turner, at pre- sent senior science master nt Thames Valley County School, Twickenham.
