BAN ON TEMPLE DANCERS.

Action by Important

Indian State.

Women temple dancers have been banned In Travancore, one of the mast important native States in Southern India.

The degradation and the wide- spread immorality which the system of "Devadasi," or the dedication of women to the temples, was revealed by Miss Katherine Mayo, author of the book, "Mother India," which aroused such a storm of criticism.

In her second book, "Slaves of the Gods," she devoted a whole. chapter to the brides of the temple. Fierce hostility in India was shown at her revelations concerning the lives of these wonten.

Social Reform.

The news that the influential State of Travancore has now banned this religious practice is, therefore, regarded as a very bold piece of social reform.

In a letter to Miss Mayo on the subject of temple dancers Bishop Whitehead wrote: "Try to imagine what London would be like if in St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster

Abbey, and other leading churches large establishments had been kept for centuries past for the use of the clergy and workers. "What chance] would reformers have of raising or even maintaining the standard of sexual morality? Yet that would be parallel the state of affairs tually existing in South India."

In recent years the number of dancers kept at the temples had decreased, but at one time the mort wealthy temples had several hun- dred. At one temple there were once over 400.

SPIRIT MESSAGES WARNING.

Lady Conan Doyle on Husband's Return.

Lady Conan Doyle, widow of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, said recently in a Press interview that she dis-- credited messages received at vari- ous seances, chiefly in the United States, purporting to have come from her husband.

"I have many times, she said, "known men claim my husband as an old and close friend, who had perhaps merely played once in a cricket match with him.

"Personality does not change with death and on the other side there are those who like to be in the limelight and who try to find a medium, sometimes of their own calibre of soul, and sometimes quite honest, through whom they can de- monstrate their own importance.'

"There is no doubt whatever inj my mind but that my dear husband will communicate when he feels that The can do good thereby and encour-

Life Over There.

When he has got anything for the world, he will communicate with us first. And as life over there is so different for instance, they are not hampered by material bodies--- and they can do so much more in the same time, he will possibly com-1 municate with several centres at once.

"Messages describing the great rejoicings in the world beyond on, his arrival have been received.

"Many messages from all parts mention a great light—a wonderful radiance - which accompanied his passing over.

"We knew long beforehand that there would be great rejoicings when my darling arrived. He was such a noble aoul and had helped literally millions of people all over the world, and you can understand what that meant to those on the other side.

"But he has not communicated! yet. The time is not yet. He will do. But these messages purporting to have come from him already can- not be accepted, and only cause pain to those nearest to him-indeed, to all those whom he had helped so."**
