THE
BRITISH POSITION.
MORE MOTOR SHIPS UNDER CONSTRUCTION,
Motor ships under construction now represent 63 per cent. of the total world's tonnage being built. In Britain, according to the Motor Ship, the figure is 60 per cent.; abroad it is 66 per cent. These proportions are, in each case, higher than have previously been noted at any time. In Bri- tain the tonnage of motor ships on the stocks is 40 per cent, mord than a year ago, and abroad' the figure is 80 per cent, so that it
is
not motor shipbuilding but steam shipbuilding which is 'in a {depressed state,
The position in the United Kingdom is not wholly satisfac- tory for, whereas a year ago, it was building 52 per cent of the world's cargo and passenger ton- naye, the figure to-day is only 39 per cent.
In other words, whilst a much- smaller tonnage of high-class pas-

C.P.R. MAY BUILD MORE BIG
SHIPS.
Amplifying his recent remarks at the launching of the Empress of Britain, when he intimated that there would be more Canadian Pacific ships built on the Clyde, Mr. E. W. Beatty, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, re- turning to Montreal on the new Empress of Japan, said in an interview that super-Duchesses and another Empress of the same type as the Empress of Britain were possibilities of the not too far distant future.

HONG KONG TIDE
The tide-table given below has been obtained by rid of the Tide-predict- ing Machine, which includes 40 com- ponents for the better prediction of ides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tkdal observatory under
the direction of Dr. Doberck during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889,
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very small.
The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and
change of current, the two phenomena being quite distinct.
