ARREST ON STAGE.

SURPRISE FOR SCANTILY DRESSED CHORUS GIRLS.

New York, July 10.'

· Stuntily clad chorus girlu starring in the "Earl Carroll Vanities," a revue at the New Amsterdam Theatre, New York, had unwelcome callers at the stage door last night- when a party, of stalwart "cops": arrived, armed with warrants for the arrest of Earl Carroll, the well known Ker ne producer, and nine of his principal girls..

Mr. Carroll, whose chief butiness in life is "to get enough girls on the stage with few enough clothes," was

not at home.

But amid great excitement the "wanted" girls were rounded up and taken to the police station, where £100 bail was demanded from each.

Crowd Looks On.

In spite of the efforts of the police to avoid a scene, thousands of spectators gathered outside the theatre as news of the raid passed from mouth to mouth.

The interest of the public was in- creased by the sight of scantily clad chorus girls, who put their heads. out of the theatre windows and shouted gaily to the minions of the law below, "Wait for us sweeties, we'll be right down directly."

The nine girls arrested have all

been taking part in a scene in which they pose as Wax models being "dressed." Subsequently one of them prances up and down the stage dressed in nothing at all, but waving a large ostrich feather fan.

A Bath of Champagne. Mr. Earl Carrof gained consider able notoriety three years ago when he served four months in prison for perjury is connection with a pro- secution over a party at which a chorus girl was stated to have bath- cd before the guests in a bath-tub of champagne.

The arrested girls (says the British United Press) include Miss Irene Ahlberg, who won the second prize in the Galveston world beauty contest in June, 1929.

Mr. Carroll is reputed to pay his chorus girls anything from £15 to £70 a week. The contracts which are given to them stipulate that they must brush their teeth five times a day and visit a beauty parlour twice a week.

- Considerable consternation and no-fittle indignation has been aroused in film circles by the know.ly ledge, (following closely after the announcement made by the Free Press Film Correspondent that the film would be the next British "talkie" to be shown in Singapore) that The Informer, a gripping B.I.P. picture of the Dublin underworld has been banned. Questioned by a Singapore Free Press representative Soon after the decision was made, known, Capt. Hussey, Censor Films was unable tar divulge what were the objections taken to the Alm as, he said, it was possible there might be an appeal. The ilm, he stated, had not been entire- ly banned.

Enquiry from other official re- sources revealed that objection had been taken to the general moral tore of the film having regard to local conditions and to the frequent gun displays.

Generally acclaimed by the, Brl-

tish Press to be a drama "most ably constructed and capably acted reach ing a fitting end on a high dramatic note" (The Times goes so far as to any it is an excellent film). The

Informer deals very realistically with a dramatic episode in the life of Dublin's underworld.

The Story.

The plot describes how Gypo, mad with jealousy over Katie Fox, the woman of the party, turns in former on Franels McPhillip the murderer of the Chief of Police who committed the crime after a rival gang fight, scenes of which open the picture. Francis is killed trying to escape the capture and a very dramatic climax is forthcoming when Gyro, discovering that he had mistaken the relationship between Katie and Francis, gives himself up to the rest of the gang, who have been pursuing him, and is shot.

Mortally wounded he staggers into a little church across the way where he finds Mrs. McPhillip in prayer. Falling at her feet he tells her that he informed on her son and pleads her forgiveness. The grief- stricken Irish mother forgives the dying man and Gypo, turning to the altar cries "Francia McPhillip, your mother has forgiven me." As

Lya de Putti heads the talented cast, as Katie Fox, supported by. Lars Hanson, Warwick Ward, Dencia Wyndham, Cari Harboard, Craighall Sherry, Daisy Campbel! and Janice Adair. The film is based on the novel by the well-known play-

Paris, July 10. M. Louis Vernoull, the well-known theatre manager, who has just given up the directorship of the Theatre Edouard VII. in Parls, has caused a sensation in dramatic cir- cles by his bold prophecy that in ten years the theatre will have diswright and novelist Liam O'Flaher appeared and its place will be taken by the talkies.

He says it is a simple question of progress. Just as the motor-car took the place of the hansom cab the talkics will take the place of the theatre. There is plenty of evidence of it already, he says.

It was after seeing a new Gor- man talkie film that M. Verneuil de clared that he ceased to believe in the future of the theatre.

The Sunday Reforce describes The Informer as "The nearest thing to grim, and relentless tragedy that the talking screen has yet pre- sented."

"Our Position is Daily Becoming More Hopeless.”

Mr. R. Gourdeau, Managing Director of Australasian Filma (Malaya) Ltd., the Importers con- cerned is keenly disappointed by the action of the authorities which he considers to be unwarranted. "It seems so unnecessary; and our post- tion is dally becoming more hopeless If we are to expect this treatment. I cannot say whether we shall арреді. There is the expense and the knowledge that it will pro- bably prove useless."

It is understood that arrange- ments were being made to show Tho Informer at the Capitol. ⠀ *.

Other British "talkies" which will be shown in Singapore (if they are not censored), will be Raising the Roof (with Betty Balfour) and Monty Blua's Compulsory Husband.

For the elaborate system of wires between the operating box and tho screen, the Mihaly system sub- stitutes an invisible ray produced by the light from what looks like A motor-car head-lamp. The light *passes through the sound track on the edge of the film, and then through a series of lenses, and the resultant ray can be projected so as to fall on a photo-electric cell fixed in any part of the theatre. (usually, of course, at the side of the ordinary manner for the load- the screen), and can be amplified in
