Prince Recalls Perilous Days for Pilots.

16TH CENTURY TESTS.

A breezy speech about the sea- dogs in the old pirates' days was delivered to the shipping pilots attending the conference of the United Kingdom Pilots Associa tion in London hy the Prince of Wales, who is Master of the Mer- chant Navy and Fishing Fleets.

"It is said that in his heart every seaman hankers after a shore job," said the Prince, "and I am perhaps counted lucky, as a 'certificated Master Mariner,' in having a shore job which occa- sionally takes me to sea."

"The present-day pilot is for tunate in being able to combine a certain amount of home life, be, with service afloat; but it was interrupted nad broken though it not so always.

"Hakkityt in his Voyage-which I can recommend for inclusion in every seafarer's library-present- ed an interesting account dated 1585 of the examination of the Masters and Pilots which sail in. the Fleets of Spaine to the West Indies.'

"In those days the pilot wus something more than a pilot, for while he relied on his knowledge of special waters he seems to have been the navigating officer Jof the ship throughout her
