TANKER OPERATION.
THE BRIGHTEST SPOT IN
SHIPBUILDING.
The brightest spot in shipbuild. ing is the tanker tonnage under construction. The future of tunker operation is so difficult to analyse with any certainty that the views of any authorities on the subject, based on an under- standing of existing conditions ure of the greatest interest to owners, shipbuilders and engine builders, and especially to manu- facturers of Diesel machinery who have received such, substan- tial orders. Hence the opinions of Mr. John McGovern, who, as a shipbuilder responsible for some of the largest motor tankers, speaks with exceptional know. ledge, are deserving of careful examination.
He considers that orders for tankers have not been overdone, after, making due allowance for those automatically falling out of commission, and anticipates that tanker contracts would afford the "sole crumb of comfort to the shipbuilding industry during the lean times which appear to be ahead,"
