It is not my intention to give, à biography of the Famous York "shireman, but I should like to give just a few interesting and perhaps instructive phases in his career.
Costly Enthusiasm. Wilfred Rhodes was born in 1877 on October 29. Ile soon became a keen enthusiast of cricket and when a youth in his early teens his enthusiasm was responsible for his dismissal from the engine sheds at Mirfield. This turn of events decided him, and he turned his, hand to perfecting his bowling with an eye to the future adoption of professional cricket. He first bowled a ball with the arm and later dug into the mysteries of spin and fingerwork. In order to be vertain whether the ball was spin ning or not, he used to dip the ball it white chalk which

Fine Test Record.
He has played in 41 Test matches against Australia, and has partici- cipated in record partnerships for the first and, curiously enough, last wickets. With Jack Hobbs he added 323 at Melbourne in 1912, his own share being 179-his one Test century, R. E. Foster and Rhodes were associated in a record partnership at Sydney in the 1903- 4 season, when they put on 130 runs for the last wicket. Rhodes holds the record for the most wickets taken in a Test match. At Melbourne in the 1903-4 season he took 15 wickets for 124 rang.
This wizard of both bat and ball has performed the "double" on six- teen occasions-scoring 1,000 runs and taking 100 wickets in a season. On two occasions he has doubled these figures.
