CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF accustomed to big scale opera
COURSES.
Is It Time for Stocktaking?
Edinburgh, May $1. How many of the 270-odd com petitors who took part in the Amateur Championship this week are going home satisfied with the conditions under which the event was played?
Whisper it not In Gath, tell, it not in the streets of St. Andrews, but several times I have heard it said this week that the Old Course has outgrown its usefulness as a Championship test. That very wide remark is capable of several interpretations, and our good friends in the old grey town may well reply that it has not been said for the first time, and the Old Course still stands a proud witness against modernism.
The bunkers are unfair, the loop of holes at the end of the course with one exception are not real golfing holes, and so on, and so forth, has been said again and again, but one of the answers to these criticisms is that the Old Course is one of the great tradi tions in golf, and it is to be respected not only for what it is, but for what it has meant to golf and golfers for countless genera- tions. Those who direct their criticism towards change in that direction may save their words. This venerable and lovable monu ment must be preserved.
Blg Entries-Big Crowds.
It is the Championship that calls for consideration. A few years ago the task of handling an enor mous number of entrants led to various avenues being explored with a view to keeping the fleld within reasonable limits; this year the entry was a record one, and the "rabbits" were there as numerous as ever. Experiment in that direc· · tion, by all the signa, has failed.
What next? Is it time for a stocktaking of our Championship courses? The whole point is that big entry lists and big crowds of spectators apparently have come to atny. No longer can the ruling authorities say that the crowd is no concern of theirs.. At every course, apart from St. Andrews, a charge is made for admission, and for his half-crown the spectator is entitled to demand that he shall have reasonable opportunity of following the play. Equally the
entrant is entitied to demand that he shall have a fair chance of playing.
The other governing authorities in the world of sport have recog. nised ttir responsibilities—a little bird whispers Inverleith and Murrayfield.
Two Examples.
To realise the position, here are two concrete instances of what happened this week. On the after- noon of the Jones-Tolley match every other game was more or less relegated to the back-ground and the crowd did not care two hoote for what was happening in other parts of the field.
are
tions. Their clubhouses palatial, their courses Are the children of an immensely wealthy people, and we could not afford to emulate them even if we had the will..
But it is not, the American players who have been grumbling, It is our Championship, aspirants. It may be sheer heresy or rebel- lion, but at any rate it is current likely to gossip. Are they ever become vocal enough to make them. selves heard? No longer is the R. & A. beyond approach; the Unions are an effective link.
The Ideal.
But whether the thing will ever be considered at all is pure con- jecture, and yet it opens up in triguing possibilities of the Ideal championship course, or rather two of them, one for Scotland Bed one for England.
At the present time Sandwich is the only championship course that truly Alls the bill, and the laugh-

able thing is that Sandwich with all its natural advantages is so far removed from centres of popula tion that the crowds are smaller- than at any other course.
But the hordes that flock to St. Andrews and Prestwick could be accommodated there with comfort. Many of the fairways are flanked by rolling wastes of sandhills and

Than can be seen at any Show.. He wages ceaseless war on weeds, And plants an awful lot of seeds. These make fine breakfast for the birds,

Then, often, should there be drought,
His wat'ring-can he fetches out, And gives each thirsty bloom a drink.
