WOMAN JUDGE OF
LONE ISLAND.
Witchcraft Stories on a London Holiday.
TRIBAL LAWS.
A woman who administers justice
to a native population of 500 people
on a small, lonely Pacific island, 40 miles from the nearest mainland, is
taking a holiday in London.
Sho is Mrs. Zahel, who, for the inst 20 years has been resident- superintendent of the island of Badu, or Mulgrave, in the Torres Straits. Just over 50 years ago the hatives of this island were head hunters.
Mrs. Zabel la the first woman superfutendent of the island. She lives in the middle of a grass-hut village.
The other five white people on the island Hve at the trading station some distance from the village.
Mrs. Zahel described her life on the island to an Evening Standard representative. She said:-
"I have very little trouble with the natives. They are all of magni. ficent physique the average height
is just over Bft. 10ins.-and they are far removed from their old head-hunting ways. They run their own pearl fishing Industry, own their own boats, and are more like u happy contented family.
"There are three tribes living in the village. It is a tribal law that no marriage may take place between members of the same tribe.
"If a woman's husband dies the brother-in-law has the right to tako the widow into his house. He may also claim the sister of the widow. Nowadays, however. girls on Badu island have a good deal to say in the choice of their husbanda."
"Bone-Pointing."
Mrs. Zahel is supported in the court of justice oyer which she pre- aides by three native counsellors." In this court all tribal disputes and misdemeanoura are judged. There are no lawyers or solicitors. Each applicant comes to the court clad in the lava-lava (or 'lain cloth), states his case and calls his witnesses, who are examined in camera.
Then Mrs. Zabel consults with her three counsellors and gives her judgment.

IMPERIAL ECONOMIC
POLICY.
Government Urged to Set Up Import Boards.
LABOUR. EXTREMISTS' PLAN.
London, Yesterday,
The various Parties in the House of Commons came to gring to-day on the issue of a closer Imperial economic policy on the motion of censure lodged on ̈July 7 by Mr. Stanley Baldwin and Mr. Neville Chamberlain.. advocating the safeguarding of the Home market, expanding the export market by reciprocal trade agree- ments with the Empire .overseas, and the imposition of duties on foreign foodstuffs devised to ob tain equivalent advantages for British manufactures and agricul ture in Empire markets elsewhere.
A group of Left-wing Labour members set down an amendment to Mr. Baldwin's vote of censure, expressing the opinion, that in view of the existing depressing International conditions in agri- culture, industry and trade, and the present patent, inability to solve these problems, nefther Free Trade nor Protection, whether ir the shape of safeguarding or Em- pire Free Trade, offers hopes of remedy.
Import Boards. Therefore, the amendment urges the Government to establish (m- port boards for the principal food- stuffa and raw materials for the protection of British agricultur-

Colonies, and elsewhere by reck- procal arrangements in lion with bulk contracts; and thirdly, nationally to reorganise the importing and exporting machinery of our staple trades. which also deal with unfair com- petition.
