A SEAMAN'S REMARKABLE
BOOK.
"The sea. is like time-an im- mutable winning force, against which succeeding generations fret and break themselves in vain pro- test." These are true words writ- ten by Mr. Frank A. Shaw in bis introduction to "Famous Ship- wrecks" published by Masara. Elkin Matthews and Marrot (12. 6d. net).
Mr. Shaw is not only a seaman,
as a living thing; this note runa but a man who looks upon his ship
through all the tragedies and dia- asters he describes in his remark able book. Moreover the author has the power of vivid description in sailor-like language, which aa one reads 'his book makes one: al. most see the dreadful things he describes. He tells of life on board the ships during the time that led up to the disaster being described and he does it well. ·

"Whitby
death"--that 18 fashion" a term that will go down to history in company with the "Birkenhead Drill."
This is a stirring book; it should be in the hands of every young man in the British Empire, for it tells them truly what sort of men their forefathers were. There are illustrations that are not worthy of the text; but it is a book to buy and read and one that through the sheer merit of its stories, could de without pletures.
HONG KONG TIDE
The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-predlet- ing Machine, which includes 40 com- ponents for the batter prediction of tides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Doberck during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very
small.
The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomena being quite distinct.
We read again in a new form. of the sinking of the Victoria; of how the Duncan Dunbar, in 1887, bound cliffs of the North Head, hurled herself to death on the iron Sydney, after her Captain, on leav Ing Plymouth had boasted "T

In a furious gale in 1861, the Whitby lifeboat went out six times and saved the crews of vessels that had been driven ashore; at a seventh attempt the boat was capsized and her, crew were drowned before the eyes of their helpless, wives and families. Two other ships drove ashore; the men of Whitby were not dismayed; they launched an old boat and saved the crews. They obeyed the call when it came, "unflinchingly, tirelessly and" to
