RHEUMATISM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO INDUSTRY,

Although, perhaps not generally admitted, it is certainly a fact which can be statistically proved, i that rheumatism in all its mani- festations, muscular rheumatism as well as the still more serious form, articular rheumatism, has a most injurious effect upon the health of the people of all civilized lands, just as have tuberculosis and the sexual diseases. The pre- valence of rheumatic affections may be seen from the following examples: In 1920 on the funds of one of the Jargest National. Health Insurance Societies were

7330 cases of muscular rheumatism and chronic articular rheumatism which altogether caused a loss of 242,632 working days; during the were same period 1248 persons treated for tuberculosis of all

kinds, and the cost of 79,332 work. 'ing days fell on the Society. This Society therefore had to pay out three and a half times as much money for rheumatic diseases as før tubercular diseases. Tha statistics of the Health Insurance

·Societies of Leipzig show that in one year amongst 100,000 insurable Munof chronic articular rheumatism male persons there were 590 cases

The yield from the Shing River and streams during the week was 74.06 million gallons.

with a loss of 19,020 working days, and that amongst the same num- ber of female insurable persons, there were 277 cases of muscular rheumatism with a loss of 9,070

working, days, and 1,816 cases of

articular rheumatism causing a loss of 38,708 days. Inability to work due to rheumatism frequent- ly becomes chronic. Statisties from the German National Insur

return ance department 1896-99

62 males per 1,000 and 85 females per 1,000 us chronic invalids as a consequence chronic rheumatism.

Other countries do not compare more favourably. In 1922, of alto- gether 18 million persons insur ed in Britain under the Health In surance Act, 370,000 were suffer ing from rheumatism, costing the sum of £2,000,000.

It is obvious from these few igures what an enormous financial loss, looked at from an economic 370.47 420.65 and industrial point of view, is caused to the state and local treasury by rheumatic diseases. It is therefore equally important in the interests of the individual as of the state that rheumatism be treated effectually and as early as possible. We have in Bayer's As pirin a remedy of which the anti- rheumatic action is so well recog nised that in a couple of decades Its fame has become world wide. The beat recommendation for this preparation lies in the fact that since its appearance the world has been defuged by Innumerable imitations, none of which has ever reached the quality of the original product. It is especially with re- gard to, what are known as second- Gry effects that these imitations compare so unfavourably with the original Aspirin. For in the Int ter the chief components acetic acid and salicylic acid, are in such close combination

that it passes through the stomach almost with- out disintegrating, and is only split up in the intestinal juices, in the blood, and in the tissue lymph. Most substitute preparations, be tray even externally by their acid smell the presence of free acetic and salicylic acid, which are the cause of such unpleasant feelings, such as a burning in the throat In the oesophagus and in the stomach, and may even give rise to more. distressing gastric symptoma such as, vomiting, etc. The rheumatic patient, therefore, will be follow Ing the best.course if he uses only the original product, Bayer's Aspirin. bey

ASITAR, one missee have ling you up when you go out, me no`savvee what name but me catchee number," Hé produces a dirty piece of paper an which is written 24641. Mr. Tupman was in an embarrassing position--he knew so many ladies. He was not the man to spend hours perusing the Telephone Directory, so he spent an uneventful evening waiting for the second call. That was enough for him, he went out the next day and purchased the TELEPHONE HANDBOOK. Now he is able to tell in a few seconds who rang him

up.

Contentment shows on the face of Mr. Tupman after his par- chase of the Handbook. His note book is the result of a survey of this book. He is genuinely satisfied, and does not regret buying this book of reference.
