A proposal by the British-American Tobacco Company, Limited, to establish a factory in Hong Kong, is fully and exclusively reported in the current OVERLAND CHINA MAIL. The announcement is all the more interesting in that the public had been informed of new Government tobacco duties only the day before the news of the new industry became known. It is understood that the site for the new factory has not been definitely settled upon.
The case in which Messrs. Andersen, Meyer and Co. are suing the Hong Kong Hotels Company in connection with certain refrigerating machinery has brought out some in- teresting, and often amusing, passages between, witness and· counsel. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL has a full account of the case, which has excited great interent locally.
A serdid tragedy enacted Inst April had its end at the Criminal Sessions, when a Chinese who murdered his work- mate was found guilty but insane. Medical evidence was to the effect that the man was suffering from murderous delusions of persecution. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a concise account of the trial,
New pirney prevention guards have arrived in Hong Kong. They are White Russians, and have been specially recruited under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police, who made the trip to Shanghai for the purpose. All the recruits are tall well-built men, and form the "E" Divi- sion of the Hong Kong Police. Full particulars are given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
The work of the Hong Kong Women's Guild and Ministering Children's League was reviewed by the Pre- sident, Mrs. W. T. Southorn, at the annual meeting held during the week. Especial thanks were due, it was stated, to Chinese who had arranged for theatrical shows by which the sum of over $4,000 had come into the funds. A complete account, together with the report und balance sheet, appears in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
Sport, as usual, is fully dealt with by the OVERLAND. CHINA MAIL staff, particular attention being paid to local tennis and lawn bowls during the present, season.
