In regard to Lord Strickland's medium of defence, the Governor reminds the Archbishop that the British Government's White! Paper reproduced the Vatican's accusations against Lord Strick- land. Man Who Made the Gyro-Compass.

HELD OVER 100 PATENTS.

The death has occurred of Mr. Elmer Ambrose Sperry, the in ventor of the gyro-compass and an engineering expert, at the age of 70. Reuter's American Service. [Mr. Sperry was born in Cort- land, New York, on October 12, 1860, and formded in 1880 the firm. of Sperry Electric Co., manufac- turers of arc lamps, dynamos, etc. Later he founded the Sperry Electric Railway Co., manufac turers of cars, which was taken over by the General Electric Com- pany in 1894):
