The chairman, Mr. Richard H. Hunter, in submitting the report. dealt generally with the beneficial work of the Society in getting into touch quickly with the fami- lies of seafaring men who had lost their breadwinner. In regard to Government aid, Mr. Hunter said that naturally one would think that the recent provision which the Government had made for widows and orphans would lessen the need for such help as was given by the Sailors' Orphan Society.
That was not the case, however, for the Government grants were simply deducted from what the Parish Councils were previously giving, and the recipients were left very much where they were, This was emphasised by the fact that applications were being re- ceived constantly for help. Dur
had been admitted to the Society's orphan homes.
Messrs. Robert S. Allan, LL.D., William Cuthbert, and James Charles Hunter were re-elected to the council of management.
