BASEBALL.

The powerful English batting side, which is not expected to be dismissed twice in the four days, is in a dangerous position. Bat- ting first, England after what appeared to be another three figure partnership between Hobbs and Sutcliffe, lost the latter soon after the half century had been hoisted. Then followed a collapse, three wickets falling rapidly. Chapman, however, played a plucky inninga Gobs and Chinese to Meet to help Hobbs to place the side on a more substantial basis. Robins, the young Middlesex all founder, is undefeated with 28 runs to his credit.

In the county championship five centuries were registered, bowlers gaining the upper hand in the majority of the matches. Yorkshire followed up their run of successes by defeating Warwick- shire by eight wickets. Essex caused a surprise by defeating Mid dlesex by the large margin of nine wickets.

Disaster, however, befell England when Sutcliffe offered the first chance off Fairfax's bowling. P. M. Hornibrook made no mistake over the catch.

This early success brought new life into the tourists' attack, and
