SINGAPORE SHOOTING, TRAGEDY.

MANDORE'S FATAL

MISTAKE...

Singapore, June 2.

A midnight boating excursion by | three Royal Engineers attached to the Military Buse at Changi on Saturday culminated in a distress- Ing tragedy when one of the party, Sapper Awberry Elmer, was shot dead by a Boyanese civilian. The fatality occurred at Mr. J. A. Elias's premises at Pasir Ris, Changl.

It appears that late on Saturday night Sapper Elmer, in company with two other sappers went out boating. Everything went well until about one o'clock when the boat capsized some distance from misca. Being unable to swim, one the shore opposite Mr. Ellas's pre-

of the party got into difficulties, and by the time he was dragged ahore by his two friends he was in a thoroughly exhausted condi- tion. The night was pitch dark.

The three Engineers, according to the Malaya Tribune, then went In search of help and eventually hit upon the married coolie lines situated at a few hundred yards

from Mr. Ellas's seaside residence:

They knocked at the mandore's quarters and finding no response

continued to bang at the door.

The mandore, thinking that thieves were at work, is reported to have fired in the air with the intention of scaring the intruders away. The banging is aald to have con- tinued, however, and fearing that the door would be broken open the mandore discharged his double barrelled shot gun through aperture in the door, hitting Sap per Elmer full in the chest and killing him instantly,

an

·Elmer's two companions ran to the Changi Police Station and re- ported the matter. The police By Order of the Board, promptly went to the mandore's quarters and arrested the man- JARDINE, MATHESON & dore. Elmer was found lying dead where he was shot, just outside the door.

SAMAR' COUNCILLOR.

Fined for Assaulting a Revenue Officer.

Manila, June 6.

For assaulting an Internal re- venue officer while performing his official duties, Emilio C. Bacuetes, municipal councillor of Calbiga. Samar, was fined P.25 by the justice of the peace court and im- mediately suspended by the pro-

vincial board from his office. His final dismissal was likewise re- commended.

It appears that on the afternoon of April 30, Bacuetes assaulted E. G. Chicano, internal, revenue officer, because the latter found

Felipe Uy Guam, a Chinese mer- chant and friend of the former guilty of violating the revenue law. Manila Bulletin.
