ments among enthusiasts. The six volters condemn the two volters but have sympathy for the four. Should there be reasons as to why one type should be superior to another?
In the early days of bright emit ters, when receivers have valves mounted in front of panels to serve a dual purpose for detection of wireless signals and for illumina- tion in preference to messy oil lamps, there were grounds for ur gument. Six volt valves had ro- bust flaments and yield a higher candle power. Improved manufac turing methods and coated film- ments have abolished the superi- ority of the 6 volt type. Four volt valves were introduced principally on account of the foregoing reasons and can now be considered super- Auous. On the other hand contin- entai manufacturers favour the 4 volters.
Modern valves, be it of 2, 4 or 6' yult types, are equally efficient in All respects. When considered from an economical point of view the 2 volters are preferable. A 2 volt accumulator costs only a third of 6 volt one. The grid return lead of a 2 volt detector can be connect- ed direct to the positive L. T. bat- tery lead without any fear of "plop- ing" whereas in the other instance with a 4 or 6 volt valve a poten. tlometer is necessary to give a plus 2 volt bins. A direct connection to the positive lend of a 6 volt detec- tor valve results in either a "plop" or a threshold howl whilst a nega tive connection brings in inemet. ency resulting in weaker signals. The use of 2 volt valves will there- fore bring in a saving of at least $30.when good quality compon- ents are used.
In Brief.
G5SW (Chelmsford) has improved considerably during the last week. The fading in strength is also de layed till after 4 a.m. very nearly one hour's difference when
com-
pared with results early in April, With the present strength he should come in, well even as early as 10 p.m.
KALXR (Manila) also showed great improvement and his pro- grammes are worth listening to once more. The boxing comment. ary was very clear.
PHI (Huizen) is excellent and should convince scepties that there is a possibility of an enjoyable The 1C- evening's listening-in. knowledgment of reports from vari- ous parts of the world rather mars an otherwise interesting pro. gramme, PCJ (Eindhoven) is still weak. Telephonic conversationa between France and Saigon and Belgium and Java are very success- ful whilst Rugby and Sydney do not appear to have difficulty whatever.

Owners of receivers using 6 volt screened grid valves will no doubt envy the selection among the 2 volters headed by a Mazda with an ampllication factor of 450. It is, however, easy to substituta the one All that is required for the olher. is to insert a fixed resistance of 27ance wire.. to 30 ohms in the filament circuit. If there. Is difficulty in obtaining such a resister, an ordinary 30 ohm Alment rheostat may be used with the movable arm taken off to avoid accidents and connection made to Teach end.
Looking farther down the list in the mains valve section another screened-grid valve, Mazda AC-SG will be noticed that has an amplia cation factor of 1,200. Though the valve is designed for sets worked off A.C. mains, it is suitable for a battery operated outfit as long as the L.T. battery is of more than 40 ampere hours capacity.
The Mazda AC-SG is closely fol- lowed by two Muillard S4V and Six-Sixty S8456 with an amplifica tion factor of 100. The impedance however is rather high 1,830,000 ohms which means that some re- sistance must be allowed for in the circuit with the consequent damp- ing.
In the Pentode class there is only one 6 volt type, a Mullard PM26. The best selection is amongst the 4 volters. If the filament of the last valve la controlled by a 80 ohm rheostat no additional resistance is

Selecting Valves.
The selection of suitable valve is often a matter of difficulty with be- ginners. Should their receivers be constructed from Magazine articles some information may be given therein but for us out here it is sometimes unsatisfactory.
In the list of valves given I have classified the various types under three headings:--
1. Resistance coupling and detec- tora.
2. Detectors and let L.F. stage. 3. Power and super-Power valves
Under the Arst heading it will be noticed that the impedance varies from 20,000 to 90,000 ohms. Trans former coupled sets require valves of not above 23,000 ohms. imped- ance and may be as low as 10,000. Where resistance coupling is used the impedance may be from 20,000 to 60,000 varying according to the value of the resistance unit or re- sister, the mean value of which should be two and a half to three times that of the valve impedance.

This is an important consideration when deciding on resistance valves. High resistance introduce excessive damping and are subject to parasi- tic noises besides requiring exces- alve high tension voltage.
Detectors and 1st L F stage. valves range from 7,000 to 15,200 ohma Impedance. Most of these may be classed as general purpose valves Where the impedance is 10,000 or more the valves are inter- changeable elther as detectors or 1st, L. F..
