NEW COAL DEPOT IN COLOMBO?

HARBOUR HULK INSTEAD OF JETTIES.

A scheme for providing better and cheaper facilities for coaling vessels entering Colombo Harbour was placed before the Port, Com- mission by Jonkheer Wm. Van Beuningen, a Dutch coal magnate recently.

Jonkkeer Van Beuningen has in- terviewed the Colombo coal firms, and is of the opinion that the Port authorities are favourably im- pressed with his plan.

He has been asked to supply written details and expects that a definite decision will be reached at the next meeting of the Port Com- mission.

Was

An outline of the scheme given to a representative of the Times of Ceylon by Jonkheer Van Beuningen, who said the proposals included the placing of an iron Phulk, well moored, in the harbour. . Callers would discharge from freighters into the hulk by means of two cranes on board the latter vessel, each of 71⁄2 tona capacity, moving on iron rails along the length and across the breadth of the hulk.

Between the two holds contain- ing the coal it was proposed to erect a repair shop. The hulk, previously a British cable ship, would be capable of storing 9,500 tons of coal. In addition to the cranes on board, which would also be used to load up lighters, Jonk- heer Van Beuningen intends to ask erect a floating permission to crane in the harbour to bunker

steamers from the lighters.

Not a New Scheme. The scheme was not by any means a novelty, added Mr. Van Beuningen, as Messrs. Lindsay Bee and Co., Ltd., of London, of whom he is a director, have several similar depots at Las Palmas. Tunis, Port Said, Piraeus, and Alglers. At the last-named port a hulk similar in size to the one proposed to be installed in Colombo harbour is moored with chains to the breakwater,

The chief advantage of the schome, he said, was that the coal went direct from the hulk to the steamers, via the colliers and lighters; and thus a great deal of time and labour were saved, in ad- dition to the coal standing much less chance of being broken up.
