Peak Servant Arrested by Constable.

A Chinese stated to be a servant employed in a European house on the Peak, was charged before Mr. R. E. Lindsell this morning with the possession of leaflets which were alleged to be of a seditious nature.

A Shantung constable said that he arrested the accused on the Peak He on the afternoon of May 31. saw him scattering leaflets at the corner of Barker and Peak Roads When searched after his arrest, three leaflets were found in one of his pockets.

The accused alleged that he knew The nothing about the leaflets. constable suddenly pounced on him and accused him of scattering the papers on the road. When he denied this the constable said that. he would take him into custody all the same, and suggested to him to tell the Inspector that he had pick- ed them up,

Detective-Sergeant O'Donovan admitted to the Magistrate that in his statements both at the Mount Gough Police Station and at Cen- tral the accused had said that he had picked up the leaflets.

The Magistrate remarked t that might be so, but he did not: think that the constable would be such a fool as to suggest a defence to the accused as alleged.

However, the case was adjourned for the production of the English translation of some of the leaflets, which is now being prepared at the

SWIMMING FATALITY.

The frat swimming fatality of the present season occurred yester- day afternoon. The victim was Lau Tse-wan (20), a Dairy Farm coolie, living at 11 East Street, Quarry Bay. He was drowned whilst swimming in a pool filled with water which had överflowed from the Talkoo reservoir.

The body was recovered by the Palice of Quarry Bay Station. i.
