LOW SCORING IN COUNTY GAMES.

Northants Win First Match.

Rain unfortunately forced the abandonment of the match be- tween the Australians and Surrey at the Oval. The tourists were in a good position, having scored 379-5 and having Don Bradman still undefeated with 252 runs to his credit. This is the fifth drawn match of the present tour, the Australians having won three of the eight matches played.

After their reverse at Southampton, Notts made no mistake at Leicester, where they defeated the home county by 180 runs in a low scoring match. Gloucester defeated Worcester at Bristol by ar innings and 13 runs after scoring only 280. Lancashire failed to proceed on their way to glory, having their match nt Lord's curtail- ed to one day's play.

Sussex were successful at Brighton where they defeated Somer set by eight wickets. In an exciting game at Leeds, Yorkshire went down to Kent by 54 runs. At Derby Northamptonshire registered their first victory of the season by defeating the home county by the small margin of 8 'runs.

Seven centuries were registered during the mid-week matches, but, taking it on the whole, the bowling gained the upper hand in the majority of the matches. At Birmingham, Warwickshire amass- ed the highest total, scoring 501-6 declared against Essex, but they failed to force a win in a game that produced three centuries.

London. Yesterday. Nottingham, the Champion County, defeated Leicestershire on the latter's ground by 130 runs. Taking first knock, Notts scored 153 against the steady Leicestor. attack. Astil returned the figures of 4 wickets for 46 runs. Leicester, before the awing bowling of Voce, collapsed for 86 rung. Voce taking 4 wickets for 28 runs.

Peach (6-111), failed bý 64 runs to obtain the necessary runs.

Northants' Narrow Win, Northants registered their first victory at the expense of Derby- shire, at Berby, by the narrow 'margin of 8 runs.

Taking first knock Northants' scored 182 runs. Derby falled to reach this total, making only 114. In their second knock, Northants badly collapsed before the bowl- ing of Mitchell, and were dis- missed for 91, wickets for 25 runs in a remark- able spell of bowling. Requiring only 149. runs to win, Derby fail-

. In their secund venture, Notts compiled 218, thus setting the home county the task of scoring 283 for victory. This was beyond Leicester, who failed again before the bowling of Vore and were led by 8 runa. dismissed for 103 rims. Voce came out with the capital analysis |

Gloucester did little better against the bowling of Root (695) and led by only 124 runя on the first innings.
