MARCH QUARTER WORST FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
GLOOMY SURVEY.
A survey of the British ship. building position and prospects issued by the Shipbuilding Em- ployers' Federation, states that the March quarter was one of the worst experienced for several years with regard to orders for new ships. Orders for cargo boats, it is stated, have been al most negligible, and tanker or ders, which have been so notable a feature of recent years, have Raw practically censed, while several of the firms engaged on liner work are completing the last vessels under construction and dispensing with large mumbers of workpeople, since they have been unable to secure other passenger work or warship work to follow that which is being finished.
Warship 'work alone before the war, it is pointed out, represent- ed 25 per cent of the value of the British shipbuilding output, but at present there is under construc- tion in private yards only one-half of the amount which way building
year ago, and less than one- seventh of the average warship tonnage under construction dur-. ing the three years 1912-1911.
The orders returns of the Federation show that 69 per cent. of the shipbuilding firms did not receive a single order during January, 84 per cent, did not get an order in February, 80 per cent. did.not obtain an order in March, and. 50 per cent. of the firms did not receive a single order through- out the whole of the quarter.
"A large proportion of the 1,614,000 tons under construction at the end of March in Great Bri- tain is in the completion stages," states the survey. ""The pros- pects for the immediate future are not bright. The serious de- pression in shipping and the great increase in tonnage laid up, which includes evefi ships which have not made a single voyage, have made.orders, or even. inquiries, source. Practically no cargo boats are now being ordered."
The fact is disclosed in thei survey that for the first time more motor tonnage than steam! tonnage is being built in Britain.
