THE VENICE

Here at the head of the Gulf of Siam, fifty miles up a narrow river alive with an exotic activity like to nothing else on earth, is the city which epitomizes the life of the Orient in greater degree than even Singapore or Shanghai Bangkok, "Venice of the East."

Of certain cities it is sometimes said that they are more than cities, they are experiences. And so it is of Bangkok. This strange Siamese capital is truly an experience, and a memorable one. Moreover, it is a living refutation of the assertion that novelty hus fled the world before the advance of modernity and Western commerciallum. Modernity has had no effect upon Bangkok, unless to provide for a few good hotels, metalled ronds and an astonishingly efficient railway system.

But the life and activities of a million Asiatics go on as they did a century ago and more. The at mosphere of the stupendous East, in all its colour and all its magic and all its mystery, still maintains here, little altered since the days of the East India Company and the tea clippers. Bangkok is the most Oriental. In
