BRAZILIAN PORTS.

Year's Working and Port Extension.

A report on the economic con- [ditions in Brazil to November, 1929, by Mr. Stanley G. Irving. Commercial Secretary, His Majesty's Embassy, Rio de Janeiro, together with regional reports by His Majesty'a consular officers at Rio de Janeiro, Sau Paulo, Bahia, Pernambuco, Para and Porto Alegre, is on sale. In the section of shipping the report reads as follows:-

The tonnage of all shipping en-| tered at all Brazilian ports in: 1928 amounted to over 44,000,000 tons, the largest total ever reach- ed, exceeding by 10 per cent, the total in 1927, which

was the largest since the war. The year 1927 was practically equal to 1914, the largest your before, and including, the war. Of the 1928 total, 17,768,000 tons was Brazi- tian, leaving 26,357,000 tons of foreign shipping, one-third of, which was British.

Of the increase, 60 per cent. was national, 10 per cent. British and 30 per cent. other foreign shipping. United States tonnage decreased from 2,555,000 tons to 2,099,000 tons, and fell from third place among the foreign countries to fifth place, being passed by France and Italy, though the ton- nage of both these countries also decreased. The most striking change was an increase of 25 per cent, in German tonnage, which totalled 6,622,000 tons, against 8,791,000 of British tonnage.

Four new, fast passenger and Furness Withy group, who have cargo motorships built for the

absorbed the old Prince Line, forming a new service called the Furness Prince Line, were put on the New York-South American route during the year. The formation has been announced of a new British line of steamships, to be known as the White Cross Eine. The White Cross fleet is to comprise 16 cargo ships, four
