"I AM USELESS."
A Chinese, St years old, with a
the Kowloon Magistracy this morn- ing on a charge of hawking with- out a licence. He pleaded guilty, and intimated that he was useless in any other sphere of work.
From April, 1908, to December.deformed right hand, appeared at 1908, Mr. Creasy travelled about a lot. being district engineer Colombó, Dandagamuwa, and aguin Colombo, after which 'posts he became Provincial Engineer, Northern Province, in June, 1909. From April, 1913, to August, 1923, Mr. Creasy held the follow- Ing posts:-Assistant Director of Public Works, acting Deputy D.P.W., Deputy Director, and net- ing Director of Public Works in Ceylon.
Arrival in Hong Kong. He left Ceylon in August, 1923, and arrived in Hong Kong on August 29, and has bee Director of Public Works ever ince.
The Hon. Mr. Creasy's hard and admirable work in the Government service, won him the C.B.E., in H.M. the King's Birthday Honours list in 1927.
His Worship remarked that the defendant should not try to trade on his deformity, because it did not follow that because of a de- crepit hand he could hawk without a licence.
The Magistrate added that it must be rather hard on people with only one hand to And work, and indicated the fact that be con- sidered the defendant a good case for a free licence.
Sergeant Farrell remarked that, although as the defendant claimed to be an inhabitant of To Kwa- Wan, he had not seen him before. However he would enquire further about the man.
Sergt. Barnicle pointed out that. it was the duty of the Sergeant to keep the front of the market clear, because that was A motor bus route.
His Worship repiled that if a policeman wished to make an ar- rest of hawkers for obstruction, he should catch
those whe were
Idling about and not those who were executing a sale of some
sort.
The Indian sergeant suld that that was rather difficult. because all the hawkers always seemed to| be engaged in sales.
Defendant was convicted and cautioned.

FINGER PRINTS.
Man Who Thought the Lines Altered.
EXPERT EVIDENCE.
A Hakka man, who was yesterday found guilty of being the receiver of five stolen chickens, the property of the a.. Sul Sang, lying at the. Kowloon Wharves, and who denied a previous conviction in 1918 for
larceny, put a different complexion on the case when before Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith at the Κοινίσου Magistracy this morning he admit- ed the conviction, after Acting Inspector Vincent, the finger-print export of the Police force, had given his evidence.
Defendant, who was 50 years of age, said that as the conviction was 14 years ago he 'did not quite re- member it. After 14 years his fingers had grown bigger and there- fore the lines on them fad become different, so he thought it would be best to deny the conviction, and by that method he thought he would "get off."
His Worship told the defendant, after the Interpreter had explain-. ed to the latter about finger prints, that he had given the Police a'lot of trouble, and in view of that previous conviction being so long ago, he would send the defendant to jail for three months with hard labour..
The defendant proclaimed that that was too long a term, because he was an opium addict.
His Worship said that he was getting off very lightly, and he hoped that the defendant would not abuse his sentence.
With the co-operation of the Det.-Sergt. Poyntz stated that A.D.C., Z.B.W. will mark a new de- the watch, which was valued at parture in its activities on Wednes- $16, was taken from the counter by day next when a one-act play, "the accused, yesterday morning be Wedding Will Not Take Place," tween six and seven o'clock. A CANDID PRISONER.
When a Chinese was to-day charged before Mr. R. E. Lindsell with the unlawful possession of an iron bar which could be used for an unlawful purpose, he told the Magistrate that he procured the bar to strike a man who had ossaulted him earlier in the day. Mr. Lindsell remarked that accus- ed was very candid about the matter and inquired from Divi- sional Inspector Bloor, in charge of West Point, if that were the same statement as the one he made in the charge room,
The Inspector replied that it wAS, whereupon his Worship imposed a fine of $10 or 14 days' hard labour, in default,
