Since the sugar subsidy was in troduced in 1924 the area under beet hus increased from 22,000 aeres to 320,000 acres, and the pro- duction last year, in terms of sugar was not far short of 300,000 tons.

Mr. Fung thought that trade depression in Hong Kong was due to the impediments put in the way of the Chinese purchaser by elvil wars in the interior, and not merely the glut of silver dollars in Hong Kong, though small tradera dit suffer because of the discount on there ntul it. might assist if Government stop- red their further importation. A Government note, issue would not remove this discount and would be a costly undertaking to Gov- ernment without any benefit to Pork Chop trade. The loading banks might remedy this situation in
