WYNDHAM STREET.

London, Yesterday. tricky wicket at Leyton provided a very interesting day's play. The Layton ground is usual- ly the home of tall scoring cricket, a four matches in last season's programme will inditate. In four matches on the Leyton ground 14.260 runs were seared for the loss of only 106 wickets. To-day, how- ever, the wicket was of such tricki- ness that the strong Australian balting alde were dismissed för 166

rub.

The tourists opened with W. M. Woodfull and W. H. Ponsford, but met with an carly reverse when in the third over of the day, Wood- full, "the unbowlnble" had his bails dislodged by a fast low-keep- Ing ball from Palmer. This is the second time during the present tour that Woodfull has been bowled. The previous occasion was when in the first practice game at Lord's, A. Fairfax knocked his off stump out of the ground.

Nine runs for one wicket, and that wicket Woodfull's, was a start- ling opening to the game, but as the result of a partnership between Ponsford and Alan Kippax, 57 runs were added for the second wicket, the score board showing at the. luncheon interval 66-2-39. In mak- ing 39 runs Ponsford took an hour) and forty-five minutes, showing ex- treme caution after seeing his cap- Itain bowled.

Kippax carried on the good work, but lacked support from his collea- gues, who were unable to play the bowling of Palmer with any degree of confidence. Through this lack of confidence the Austra- linna lost their advantage of 66-2, and the remaining batamen were dismissed for 30 runs.

Alan Kippax, proving the buck- bone of the side, rade 67 runs in. a'patient innings which Inated two hours and a quarter. Amongst his, best hits, were included three 1's.)

H. J. Palmer, a young fast bowl- or, took five of the tourist'a wickets for 40 runs.

Palmer played only once for Players for First League

Essex last season and on the Ley- ton ground took five Worcester- shire wickets for 97 runs. Essex would well be advised to keep an eye on this youth and endeavour to induice him to play more often for the county.

At the close of play Essex were 113 runs behind with seven wickets

Races for high-spiced land acro- planes of the Aerial Derby type have declined, and the Schneider Maritime Trophy is now the great speed-research occasion. But, the United States will hold a high- speed land aeroplane race this year, and this is apparently fond- ing to a revival of the contrivance for dropping the landing carriage after the start, in order to save air. rosistance. Many accidents were caused by these experiments a few years ago,
