Nothing worries the golfer more--this is to prevent falling back, than failure to drive the distance and to set the left hip into the place with his shots that his build aug- where it will form a firm base on gests he ought to drive.

Many tips are given on how to get the setting of the hip.

One that explains the action is,

That is undoubtedly why a recent reference to distance and how to get it has brought me a number of letters. A player will smile at oc-like so many good golfing hints, ana, degree which he took with. K. Fire Ins.....$300 ensional bad putting or Auffed mashle shots, but he will not be out driven by people smaller than him self. He tries hitting harder, and this nearly always ruins his game. A correspondent gets down to fundamentals about the golf swing

"When he anYSE"

"Surely, the secret of long hit- ting without loss of direction lies in keeping the left side of the body rigid?"

Avoid Falling Back, This is, in effect, what I have pre- viously suggested. My way of pul ¡ting it was that the player must avoid "falling back". 1 dislike talking of rigidity in the golf swing. because it is so easy for any player to fall into the habit of becoming tonse and stiff when he is aiming to be firm.

It is the same with the straight left arm-a stiff left arm and a straight loft arm are easily confus- ed, but what a differénce the differ ence makes to the swing!

My first suggestion to the player who wants to master the principle of the firm left side is that he should take out a spoon and half- a-dozen balls, and drive them down a practice fairway--not using a tee or choosing the easiest lies.

Avoid "Floppy" Shets...

A player who can get distance with second shots should never have any difficulty with his. drive -of-the-tee-

The golfer will ask why the firm left side is vital.

It is vital because it ensures a plvotas distinct from a sway, or lunge and because, with the arms hitting against the resistance of the loft side, the club-head comes through with a snap.)

If the left side is not firm, and the player lunges on to the ball, he will make what

the professionals call a "floppy" shot; the club-head will drop on to the ground behind the ball, instead of swinging through

it.

One or two good golfers, I know, do drive with a marked sway.

The Base Of The Swing. Walter Hagen, on the contrary, regards the left hip as the base of the swing. He points out that if the left hip is in position, the swing must be right, and he urges that the first movement of the upward swing is towards "setting" the left hip where it is to remain through out the swing.

Moat first-class players, on ana- lysis of their own methods, must agree with him here.

It will be noticed, too, that "the first movement of the left knee is towards the ball, not away from it

He hopes to run in the German champion- ships at Berlin in June.

I must again mention the dangers of talking of a firm left side, a straight left arm, and a "set" hip. These are what, in fact, are want- ed, but they are not to be con- fused with a general tightening-up and a binding of the muscles.

Correct Timing.

The golfer can avoid one of the dangers of tightening up by hold ing the club firmly in his angers, rather than tightly, in bis hands.

He can avoid other dangers of tightening-up by keeping in mind the piece of advice that I often re- peat because it is so good-that he should feel himself "go limp all over" before beginning to swing It is certain that distance cannot be achieved by making too great: an effort to hit harder. What is needed is a pivot and a well-timed, swinging shot. The firm left side helps in both directions.-(China Mail Copyright.)
