Chinese Pair Win Through to Final.

FINCHER BROTHERS LOSE:

[By "Base Line."} A great surprise was in store for the spectators at the I.K.C.C. yesterday when Kong Toe-cheung and Ho Kalau defeated the Fincher brothers in straight rets. The losers In the pre- vious round had played brilliant tennis against the Lo grothers, and there were, many who favoured their chances for the championship How disappointed they must have been at the form of their favourites yesterday!

There was a large crowd present when the players came out, and the numbers increased during the match. The weather, after a long unsettled period, was hat, yielding 21 sunbaked court, and play was consequently fast and exhilarating.

commencement.

Ka-b

Kong Too-cheung and Hu were masters of the situation from the Doubles depend more on team work than individual brilliancy. In yesterday's match the winnews had a perfect understanding and both play- ed brilliant tean. Hong was in great form, both his forehand and backhand drives, invariably passing the Finchers at the net, whilst Ho Ka-la wns spee- tacular overhead, and was popular with the Chinese section of the crowd. E. C. Fincher was very much off form, many of his usually good shots finding the net, and on more than one occasion he was badly caught out of position. E. F. Fincher did not play up to his form of the previous round. His servjur, with the exception of one or two flashes, was not so effective. He lost his service on four occasions and was too prone to stand on the centre line,

The Games.

Kong Too-cheang took the first game for the loss of fifteen points. E. F. Fincher won his service after thres deuces to make it one a. Each player won his service in the first five games, and then "E. " lost his service to give the Chinese a lead of 4-2. E. C. Fincher won his service after Jo Ka- lau had lost his, and fall was onikk. Kong took his service to draw away at 6-4, and then "E. F.", to the consterna- tion of bis supporters, again lost his service to give the Chinese the first set.

The second set was similar to the previoas one except that the Fincher brothers tried $2 lubbing

cam-

paign, which was denft with, in the most elective manner by the versatile Ho Ka-lau. "E. C." lost his service for the Chinese to take the lead at 4-2, and they

took the set at 6-3,

The third set saw the Finchera lead- ing 4-1 after winning a string of throe games. Kong Ton-cheung, with his powerful drives, and Ho Ka-lau's dazzling display at the net, however, provod too much for the Fincher brothers and they in turn lost three games. There was a great chance of their taking the net when leading 6-4, but the combination against them was too strong, and they lost their van tage. "E, F," lost-his service to give the winners the lead, and the match was

over.

OLDEST COFFIN.

Pre-Bronze Age Find

Near London.

British Museum officials have been asked by the police to report on a stone coffin found during cavations at Church-road, Bedding ton. It is believed to be a relic of before the Bronze Age-1000-2000 B.C.

Bones found inside are believed to form a neatly complete skeleton, while the skull is stated to have a special medical interest, on account of traces of a disease. The teeth, only one of which is missing, are wonderfully well, preserved.

The coffin, which is made of sandstone, and is seven feet long and three feet wide, is believed to be one of the oldest of its kind yet discovered.
