ATHLETIC STILL IN THE RUNNING.

TO-MORROW'S SHIELDS FINALS

(By "Roamer"]

A great game was followed on the Club ground last Saturday with the Police and the Navy in opposition. In spite of the bad state of the ball and ground, due to the recent heavy falls of rain, these twenty-two players put up a splendid show and gave their followers plenty of thrills, The first few minutes promised well as the play was evenly contested and then the Navy opened out to advance in good style. Firth found the net with a low drive that gave Clarke little chance. Back the Navy came but Clarke dealt with all efforts, Mention must be made of Peacock's tricky header which was only kept out.

see, that

Player Carried Off. With the Police on the aggres- sive it way plain to there was not going to be much in it for Ward and Carey were busy until the former got knocked out and had to be carried off. Although the Navy had a player short for some minutes the Police did not make much headway but their chance came by the aid of a free kick, the ball being punted into the goal mouth to bring about a melee from which Frazer scored and put his side on terms. Encouraged by this success the Police strove hard to get ahead but were well held

Over-eagerness spoiled chances for the Navy for they were pulled up for offalde a number of times. Then came the thriller for the Police got well on the run and Gowana finished it off by beating Jarvis all the way.

This reverse was not to the Navy's king and they took up the running in very determined fashion and in breathless anticipation Firth was standing unmarked with a clear view of Clarke when Thompson:

wung the ball over, and the inside right made no mistake with his drive.

Offside Bogey.

There have

teret with these forces battling for supmacy but nothing was given away. With sixty-five minutes of play gone it looked as if this would end repetition of the previous League meeting but also the snatch goal came from Suen Kam-shup to carry the points and record a worthy victory.

The St. Joseph's versus Recreio game was a very disappointing one for many scoring chances by both aides were missed. J. Santos netted just before the Interval to give Recreio the lead and Sansom equal- Ised for the "Saints" just before the end. St. Joseph's have now completed their fixtures.

On the Railway Ground Kowloon opened the scoring through Hedley with Rayson registering the "Sets" equaliser just before the interval. With Kowloon dead out of luck but having the better of the exchanges the "Sets" were fortunate in taking the lead by the aid of Earley and later for Argus to misjudge But- cher's run in and slipping past him.

The "Sets" will have to get together better when they meet the Athletic for that game will probably decide the "runners up.”

With the Juniors

of their

From the Juniors the shock of the day came from the Navy. They had three parts of the game with Eastern but could not find the net. The Navy's only hope for the Cham- pionship is winning all remaining five fixtures and displac- ing the K.O.S.B. on goal average if they can keep their goal intact, as Chinese Athletic "A" have only to lose two points and South China "A" one to give them the verdict.

The "Sets" had a day out with Kowloon for they left the field with nine goals to their credit. Two came from the pivot (Mead) and the re malaing seven from four of the for- wards-Guest two, Eveit two, Lay- shon two and Denmead with Palmer the worker on the right wing.

Chinese Athletic "B" were beaten by four clear goals by the University while in a good tussle

Playing on the Stand Court at the H.K.C.C. yesterday afternoon in the third round of the Open Singles Championship M. W. Lo, the

present Champion of the Colony defeated Ng Sze-cheung, a brother of Ng Sze-kwong, the former Hong Kong Champlon, in straight sets.

Previous to this match there had been three replays, all of which proved fruitless due to the

fact that bad light caused play to be abandoned before a definite re- sult could be gained. Yesterday's

steadiness proved of no avail yes- terday as Lo was in great form and punished many of his returns very severely.

Before he can hope to climb to championship heights, Ng Sze- cheung must introduce a little more gusto Into his game. He has enterprise and steadiness com- bined, but, though these are very effective, they cannot win a match, as shown in yesterday's game,
